Oakleigh in a thriller

Congratulations and a big thank you for all those who organised and attended the EMFC ladies day on Saturday. From all reports the girls had a great time in the social room. See some photos of the girls in our gallery. If you have any more photo’s e-mail us at committee@emfc.com.au. Thanks to

Seniors
Oakleigh was able to overrun East Malvern in the last quarter after trailing by 20 points at 3/4 time. It was always going to be a tough ask with another 5 players missing from last weeks winning side. I am sure that we have a lot more class to add than Oakleigh who showed very little of it on the weekend. A great game of footy was tarnished by an incident involving Elvis Alimovski after the siren. Elvis’ brain had obviously left the building well before Saturday. A decent person would have simply shown some humility after a win by shaking hands with the opposition. That aside, we now sit at 4 wins / 1 loss after five rounds. I am sure Matty will take that start to the year any day. Andrew Johnson and Paul DeKoeyer were standouts with Simon Hart continuing on his merry way with 5 majors.
Reserves
The Reserves games was very entertaining affair with East Malvern taking it right up to Oakleigh for three quarters. Scores were level at 3/4 time at 6-4. The endeavour shown by the players was very good for most of the game. The improvement apparent from the sidelines is impressive and I would encourage all the guys to get to training as the second half of the year promises to be more exciting than the first. Up to half a dozen players will come back from the seniors so the two’s players need to cement their place in the side. A win against Hampton at home is now a real possibility and should almost be expected by the playing group. Good players included Matty Street, Pete Gill and Benny Raisbeck. Good to see a few new guys play their first game. Promising!

We take on Hampton at home this week. Go Panthers!  Also, Bogan Bingo is on Saturday night.   This promises to be a hilarious event so make sure you bring along some friends and family.

EMFC win against Springy (just)

Seniors
EMFC won a close encounter against Springvale in cold, wet and icy conditions down at Springvale. Springvale Districts failed to capitalise on a slow start by EMFC kicking 1-7 in the first term. After a rev up by the coach, EMFC kicked away with a handy lead after a better 2nd and 3rd quarter however Springvale never went away and was able to keep EMFC scoreless in the final term. EMFC finally running out winners by 7 points. It may have been another story if it wasn’t for standout performances by our backmen Vis and Will Saddler.
Reserves
You’d be excused if you had the impression that the reserves got beaten by decent margin in a low scoring afair against Springvale Districts. The reality is that both teams had 6 scoring shots at 3/4 time however East Malvern were unable to capitalise in the final term unable to put a few more through the big sticks. The result was the exact reverse of the senior game where EM lost with more scoring shots. Pete Gill, Benny McIvor, Troy Creelman, Duncan Scardetta and Tim Holmes were amongst our best.

Don’t forget Ladies Day at the football club next week.!!

Ladies Day – Sat 12th May 12noon

East Malvern top of SFL Div 2 Ladder

East Malvern Seniors
The Seniors defeated South Yarra on the weekend with both Hart brothers kicking a bag and Ash Martin continuing to impress in only his second game.   South Yarra have signed up a couple of players since the start of the year and will be more competitive as the year rolls on.  Very pleasing to see the list of our best was made up of all new or returning players; A. Martin, S. Hart, P. De Koeyer, M. Carroll, N. Hart. Next week will be a much tougher assignment against Bentleigh who were narrowly beaten by Skye however confidence should be building as we can see improvement each week as players spend more time together.   Personally I a beginning to wonder when Trent Hotton will play his first game.  I can only conclude that the floral jumper he was wearing at Thurs night training was another setback. This week George Gemetzis plays his 100th game for the club. Well done George… terrific effort!

East Malvern Reserves
The Reserves posted their first win for the year against South Yarra. The result was never in doubt after the 2nd and 3rd quarters where we were able to take a commanding lead into the final quarter. Good to see Maggo get in the best again and good to see the evergreen Mark Oram playing his first game in 2012. I was not at the game this week but I can imagine the EMFC song was sung with gutso. I also assume Hammo was pretty happy with his 6 goal bag. With a few players unavailable, injured and also left out this week the spots in the reserves side are only going to get harder to secure. The message is clear for the two’s side. No train no game! A good position to be in after a few flat years.

Upcoming Social Events
Don’t forget to tell the WAGS that Ladies Day will be held at the club on Saturday 12th May 2012.   Details to follow but expect that festivities will begin at 12noon upstairs in the comfort of the newly refurbished social rooms.
